SPL - 4 August 2012

The most incredible off-season in history is finally over. No more Rangers in the SPL, two promoted teams, the return of the Dundee derby to go along with the Highland and Edinburgh derbies. Finally the new season is upon us! And with that, comes another wonderful opportunity to make money.

First week of the season is always tough, as it is often hard to gauge how much teams have naturally improved, and how quickly (and fluently) new signings will fit into the squad.

Celtic v Aberdeen (Celtic @ $1.22 – opened $1.20 multi only, u2.5 @ $2 – opened $2.10)
Celtic were champs last season, and got off to a solid start in the Champions’ League qualifiers. Easy money that they beat Aberdeen. Aberdeen shouldn’t be as hopeless this season as they were last, new signings will definitely provide a massive boost. Still, they are playing the champs…on opening day…at Celtic Park. Multi the $1.20 on offer for Celtic with any other bets you place.
Also recommend taking the u2.5 goals, freely  available at $2.
Dundee United v Hibs (Draw @ $3.50)
Dundee United were absolutely brilliant, and incredibly unlucky, in their Europa League qualifier on Thursday night against Dinamo Moscow. Incredible performance that shows how good they are. However, the short back up combined with the natural let down after the demoralising late goal conceded, I have them drawing in this one. They should win, and might very well, but the $3.50 on offer is excellent odds.
Hibs are ordinary, but they could sneak points in this. Small bets only.
Kilmarnock v Dundee (Kilmarnock @ $1.83)
I’m not a fan of Killie and have already taken them in a multi to get relegated. However, Dundee are definitely not ready for the SPL. No signings since they were informed (less than 2 weeks ago!) that they’ll be joining the SPL suggests their team is purely SFL1 ready. They might go okay, have a very solid manager, but won’t be ready for the opener. Killie are about the right odds in this one.
Ross County v Motherwell (Draw @ $3.20 – opened $3.25)
Ross County are a very good team, and all of Scotland will learn how good this season. Their home opener against a Motherwell side with European prospects bodes well for a potential draw. Motherwell are the better team, but with the potential some players may be rested, plus the long trip for the Steelmen both for this game, and the following week in Europe, leans me to the draw.

Good luck!
