Scottish Premier League - Midweek Preview

Scottish Premier League - Midweek Preview

Returned to winning form last weekend, and now are presented with two midweek games.
As of now, SportingBet did not have any odds up so will quote SportsBet odds.

Rangers v Kilmarnock (Rangers @ $1.14, Rangers/Rangers @ $1.62, Draw/Rangers @ $4)

Rangers are in their best form of the season, Kilmarnock are plodding along. Not overly interested taking $1.14 for the expected Rangers win, so have decided to investigate some exotics.

Rangers half time/full time double is $1.62 and probably the best way to find value. I’ll also have a small play on the $4 for a draw first half, Rangers second half result.

Hibs v St Johnstone (Draw @ $3.20, St Johnstone @ $3.04)

St Johnstone were good on the weekend winning their first home game of the season over top 3 candidate Hearts. Hibs are showing improved form of late but have not won at home. St Johnstone haven’t conceded away.

Am expecting a draw to be honest, but will have something on a St Johnstone win also as their away record is too good to ignore.

NFL Jacksonville @ Carolina

JACKSONVILLE @ CAROLINA

Scottish Premier League - Week 9 Preview

Scottish Premier League - Week 9 Preview

Very disappointed with last week’s results. Yes there was hard luck stories, but that happens with gambling – we were just on the wrong side.

In any case, we’re looking to the positives and a full weekend of fixtures again.

Brief previews this week for all games.

Celtic v Inverness CT (Celtic HT/FT @ $1.62, Celtic 2-0 @ $6.50, 3-0 @ $8, 4-0 @ $12)

Celtic want to bounce back. Their last game, a loss at Rangers, will have them (Lennon) fuming. Will bounce back and destroy Inverness (who I like) and their very ordinary defence. Loading up.

Dunfermline v Rangers (Rangers @ $1.33)

Rangers will win this, bouncing back from an embarrassing League Cup loss at Falkirk midweek. Dunfermline have not won at home, Rangers have not conceded away.

Hibs v Dundee Utd (Dundee Utd @ $2.55)

Should be a comfortable win for Dundee Utd. Good performance last week, very good away, Hibs are ordinary (though did win midweek League Cup against Motherwell). Still, United win.

Motherwell v Aberdeen (Motherwell @ $1.90)

Motherwell have definitely hit an ordinary spell of form. The midweek League Cup loss, compounded by the poor losses at home to St Johnstone, and away to Celtic…could be in trouble? Still, Aberdeen are poor and have not scored away from home. Expect Motherwell to bounce back.

St Mirren v Kilmarnock (St Mirren @ $2.35, Draw @ $3.20)

Have taken two bets with this one. St Mirren are a very good team but haven’t quite produced of late…maybe I overrate them. Kilmarnock are a good team and also haven’t produced well of late (again, maybe I overrate them?). Anyway, Killie haven’t won away from home and cannot see them winning here. Have taken the Saints win with a small play on the draw just in case…

St Johnstone v Hearts (Hearts @ $2.35)

If this game were played at Hearts, I would have $1000 on the draw. St Johnstone are outstanding away from home – have not conceded an away goal. At home however, dismal, and without a win. Hearts have been a bit hot and cold of late, but I expect them to bounce back (despite not having won an away game). SOMETHING’S GOT TO GIVE!

Scottish Premier League - Week 8 Preview

Scottish Premier League - Week 8 Preview

As suggested, small bets were the way to go last week. Only a 3-3 result, which is disappointing considering the recent run of form.

When you look at the actual games, we were a little stiff. The goal Hearts conceded in their draw with Inverness (we had Hearts win) was an absolutely ridiculous goalkeeping error. You’d struggle to see that error again in the SPL this season.

St Mirren outplayed St Johnstone but couldn’t find the back of the net. St Johnstone seem to find a way to get teams to play at their level – that is, their level of struggling to find the back of the net (only 4 goals scored by St Johnstone this season).

And yes, I knew I shouldn’t, but I did, taking the Celtic/Motherwell draw. I won’t do it again, I promise!

On to this week’s games and needless to say I am back with confidence. Some outstanding fixtures this week, and not just from a betting perspective.

As always, I have highlighted the better bets below, but a preview is provided for all games.

Rangers v Celtic (Draw @ $3.10, Celtic @ $2.63)

Not necessarily a game I’ll go hard at, but I have to put it top as it is one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports. Yes it is definitely down about 20 notches from 10 years ago, but still, give me a Rangers/Celtic game over just about any other football game in the world. The passion cannot be equalled.

Anyway, onto this instalment. If this were at Celtic Park, I’d have no qualms in declaring Celtic a moral. I would expect them to be around $2 too, and anything above would be value.

Celtic are starting to put together some good form. Craig Forrest was outstanding last week against Motherwell, starring in the role usually reserve for Kris Commons. While Commons is out of form, and on the bench, I do expect him to play a decent part in this encounter. You must play your best players, often regardless of form, in these Old Firm matches. Commons is still class.

Rangers have been quite fortunate for mine this year, getting results when not really deserving them. Their midfield is very good but their forwards haven’t been on fire, and their defense has seen more combinations than the Federal Reserve vault. (if there is one)

I will be taking the draw because Rangers will be lifted by their home support plus Celtic have an away Europa League trek to Madrid to contend with, but will also play a small bet on the Celtic win. Anything can happen in these games, I wonder what odds at least 1 red card?

Motherwell v St Johnstone (Motherwell @ $1.90)

Despite St Johnstone’s ability to get the opposition to play at their level (ie. no goals), Motherwell will be too good here.
Yes I know I have been burned pretty well in Motherwell contests against the Old Firm, but I fully expect them to bounce back at home against a team that will struggle to score all season.
Motherwell will revert to their usual style (as opposed to whatever that was v Celtic) and I see Higdon, Murphy & Law being far too good for their opposition. Watch the comments, may have a score bet too.

Dunfermline v Hibs (Dunfermline @ $2.38)

Slightly tricky game but Dunfermline should win. If Dunfermline can score twice at Killie and v Motherwell, win at Dundee Utd, St Johnstone…they win here.
Originally had the draw bet as well, at $3.20) mainly because I’m not sure how good or reliable Dunfermline are, but based on the above form, surely they win. Surely?

Aberdeen v Kilmarnock (Draw @ $3.20, Kilmarnock @ $2.70)

I’m puzzled. Both teams have tricked me this season. Aberdeen haven’t looked that bad at times this season, but without doubt they struggle to score. Killie have looked super impressive at times, yet throw up poor results like the loss at Inverness.
I think the draw might be the right result, but will take a Killie win also for a smaller play.

Other Games

Dundee United v Inverness CT (Dundee Utd @ $1.80, Draw @ $3.40)

Good odds for the draw, or the Caley win. Really confused. Again I stress, I really rate Dundee Utd. But when you look at the standings, they are 9th. They have 1 win from 7 games (disgraceful). They have 7 goals in 7 games (disgraceful when you consider shots taken, teams played etc). THEY HAVE A -5 GOAL DIFFERENCE – perhaps the most disgraceful stat of all.

Still, I feel they are a very good team. I’ve mentioned this in just about every blog so far, they miss David Goodwillie. They don’t seem to have a striker who can score on a consistent basis yet they will create themselves plenty of chances over the course of the game.
Again I watched them be unlucky, this time against Rangers.

Will only be playing small in this game, with the United win plus the draw. Inverness CT are still a very decent side and not as bad as their record suggests (hang on, 1 win from 7 games, 7 goals scored, 10th, -6 GD…hmmm). I have them pegged as 8th best in the SPL thus far…am I really that insane?

Hearts v St Mirren (St Mirren @ $4.20, Draw @ $3.40)

Going to take the value in this game. Hearts are a better overall side for sure, but something tells me that St Mirren come very close to matching it with them and, if Hasselbaink fires, could most certainly cause an upset. At the odds, I’m very happy to take St Mirren.

UEFA VS...UEFA? (@wiggum7534)

UEFA vs…UEFA?

Celtic FC (Scotland) and FC Sion (Switzerland) played in the final qualifying playoff round of the Europa League a few weeks back. After a bore 0-0 draw at Celtic Park, Sion triumphed at home to the tune of a 3-0 scoreline. This was helped by Celtic central defender (and Swedish international) Daniel Majstorovic’s red card within the first minute of the second leg. Yes, I know, he is a very special player to be red carded so soon. With his red card also came a penalty, a Swiss goal and game/tie over.

In general, that would mean Celtic are out of Europe. HOWEVER, Celtic protested. Interesting, but why?

Well, like Marty McFly, let’s rewind a little.

In 2008, Sion “signed” a goalkeeper by the name of Essam El-Hadary from Egyptian club Al-Ahly. The only problem was that the club were not aware that they’d actually sold the player to Sion. Sion claimed that they had bought the player using the Webster-arrest (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webster-arrest).

The Wester-arrest was essentially where FIFA had ruled that Andy Webster (over-rated Scottish defender/hack) was able to leave Hearts, despite being under contract, for a fee of 625,000 pounds (why is there no “pound” sign on my keyboard!). FIFA said that he had satisfied Article 17 which essentially claims that if:
a) The player is under 28 after 3 years or
b) Over 28 after 2 years

He is generally outside of FIFA’s “protected period” and therefore as long compensation is paid to his former club (essentially the remainder of his contract) he may sign elsewhere.
Anyway, Al-Ahly filed the incident to FIFA which resulted in the player being fined and banned for 4 months. Sion were banned for one year but, due to an appeal, the ban only took effect last January.

Ok, so let’s follow Marty back to the future…August 2011.

Sion had fielded 5 signed players since the ban took effect, in their 2nd leg Europa League playoff against Celtic.

Michel Platini, UEFA president, has said that Sion were “in clear violation of the ban”. As a result of the Celtic protest, UEFA removed Sion from the Europa League group stage and put Celtic in their place. Nice, all sorted!

However, Sion have since appealed and, today/tonight depending on where you are, UEFA are supposed to rule on the outcome.

The latest that I have read is that the court (Swiss court) that heard their final appeal said that Sion should be reinstated, but left that decision up to UEFA. (of course SI.com says that Sion claims they have been reinstated)

If Sion is reinstated then it makes a complete mockery of any and all FIFA and UEFA rulings. IF football is not already made a mockery of with players constantly diving, poor refereeing decision (yes I’m talking to you Kevin Blom) and the financial dominance of so few, then surely this is the final straw.

FIFA and UEFA are in charge of the rules and rulings by which others abide. Yes they cannot necessarily stop multi-billionaires taking over clubs and ruining certain domestic leagues (yes, I’m talking to you EPL!), they cannot stop players from leaving when out of control (I’m talking to you Jean-Marc Bosman) but surely, surely they have control over their own rules and decision which resulted in a ban enforced upon Sion. If Sion have fielded ineligible players, than they are certainly not entitled to a result in that game. It is no different to a player who is serving a suspension, playing in a particular game when ineligible. Yes it is a technicality, but the game needs some rules by which to provide a level and just playing field.
Sion seem disinterested however.

All this over an Egyptian goalkeeper…I’ll be…

Scottish Premier League - Week 7 Preview

Scottish Premier League - Week 7 Preview

I’m always a little concerned heading into a weekend of games when there has been an international break. I know probably not a lot of SPL players were involved in international fixutres (outside of Celtic/Rangers) but its still a little tricky. Maybe it is just a tough round of SPL games. Maybe its because the week off also gave me a week off, who knows. My advice is slightly smaller bets this week.

As always, I have highlighted the better bets below, but a preview is provided for all games.

St Mirren v St Johnstone (St Mirren @ $2.40)

Absolutely love the way St Mirren has been tracking this season. They generally been a decent odds and have provided some nice results for us. They conceded two early goals against Celtic last game, yet didn’t back down. They had 57% possession against the SPL’s best team (yes, I know they’re not top!). That is excellent, plus Nigel Hasselbaink returned in sensational form.
St Johnstone have been a little better than I expected this year but I cannot see them beating St Mirren. Games like this are often a danger, with two ‘little’ clubs, but I’m confident St Mirren can do the job, and $2.40 seems good odds.

Kilmarnock v Dunfermline (Kilmarnock @ $1.83)

Happy to back Killie this week despite them costing me last week at Inverness. They’re a good side and a return home, where they are unbeaten, should see them see off Dunfermline.
The Pars have been going okay themselves and do hold a 1-0 away win at Tannadice Park (Dundee United). Possible they could claim a point here, but I’m happy to back the home side at okay odds.

Inverness v Hearts (Hearts @ $2.35)

Think Hearts will have too much class for Caley. I am a big fan of what Terry Butcher has done with Caley but if Hearts are a top 4 side then they really should be winning this. The odds seem about right and I’m happy to be on.

Dundee United v Rangers (Rangers @ $1.50)

This is an interesting one. I have no idea how the week off may have improved Rangers. They definitely needed it. With all the pressure mounting on them, with new signings joining the club, maybe it is just a case of needing a break from it all. Maybe it will help them improve immensely. Not sure.

Dundee United haven’t been bad this year, but they’re definitely missing David Goodwillie. Six points from six games is not nearly good enough for the talent this side has. I was originally leaning to a Rangers win, with a small play on a draw, but we’ll go with just the Gers win.

Other Games

Hibernian v Aberdeen (Draw @ $3.20, Aberdeen @ $2.80)

This is a trick game, but I think I have the answer. Aberdeen put in a much improved performance against Rangers, and were a little unlucky not to have found the back of the net, dominating much possession in the 2nd half. However, that has been their problem all season (ok, except when playing Inverness). While they definitely did look good against Rangers, though Rangers were definitely down after their European exit, I still wonder how they will fare in this game.
Hibs are awful. Downright awful. But, they did show some improvement in their derby game against Hearts. I’m going with the draw in this game, as while I think Aberdeen are much better, I’m still not completely convinced. I still have major concerns about Hibs defence, it might just be bad enough to gift the Dons a goal. For that reason only I will have a small play on the Aberdeen win too.

Celtic v Motherwell (Draw @ $5.25)

I know this probably doesn’t seem like a great idea, but I’m still convinced Motherwell can take one of the Old Firm down, and while it is a big ask to do it at Celtic Park, I’m gonna have a crack anyway.
Can’t see Motherwell winning this one, but a draw is definitely on the cards. Motherwell looked very good last week in their bounce back game against Dunfermline. Celtic still haven’t hit their straps yet, so I can see them dropping a couple of points. They’ve moved a couple of players on and a few of their stars from last season, such as Commons, haven’t found their form as yet.
Definitely only a small bet, but I’m happy to take the draw.

$10 for a St Mirren/Hearts/Killie multi!

College Football Futures

Tomorrow marks the return of College Football. Here at AussieSportsGuys we have been looking forward to this moment for a couple of months with plenty of time and dollars tied up into the upcoming season.

Here is a list of our current future bets for this season. Please note that the odds on these may no longer apply.

BCS NATIONAL CHAMPION

Wisconsin - $41
South Carolina - $51
Texas A & M - $51
Arizona State - $101

CONFERENCE CHAMPION

ACC

Virginia Tech $4

SEC

Alabama $3
South Carolina $9

PAC 12

Arizona State $7.50
UCLA $35

Big 10

Wisconsin $4.00

Conf. USA

SMU $8

A few of these picks like Arizona State have been taken with the view that they will be a good chance for making the conference title game. The value attached with each pick will present nice hedge opportunities if everything pans out like we think.

However so much can change so quickly. A team like Arizona State has been struck down with injuries over the past month. As a result the Pac 12 South has opened up a bit more and we have taken a ticket on UCLA at $35 with sportsbet.com

The excitement of College Football is almost here.

Good luck for everyone involved finding a winner.
